Events: Opening Ceremony (12.01.)
The Olympic Ice Stadium, the Tyrolean Ice Arena, the Tivoli Stadium and the Tyrol Sport Centre, as well as the Olympic Sliding Centre Innsbruck, are among a number of top-level sports facilities in the Tyrolean capital which merged in March 2004 to form the Olympiaworld Innsbruck complex.
Beside hosting competitions of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012, the 2010 European Handball Championships and the 2011 European Volleyball Championships, the multipurpose arena has also welcomed international superstars such as the Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, Tina Turner and Pink. After Innsbruck and Vienna were selected to co-host the 2005 Ice Hockey World Championships, the Olympic Ice Stadium underwent significant renovation work during which a second, smaller ice hall, the Tyrolean Ice Arena, was integrated into the new complex. It has served as the home of the HC TWK Innsbruck ice hockey team ever since.
During the International Children´s Winter Games 2016 the Olympic Ice Stadium will host the Opening Ceremony (12.01.). Figure skaters will battle it out in the Tyrolean Ice Arena, while the nearby open-air Olympic Speed Skating Oval will host the finals of the Speed Skating competition.
